Display Principle in Sunlight – Traditional Screen

Traditional screen used to adding touch panel directly to the surface of LCD. It makes an air gap in between and therefore leads to 3 reflectors: touch panel VS environment, touch panel VS air, LCD VS air. If there is no special treatment, the reflectivity of each reflector to external light would come to almost 4.2%, totaled to 12.6%, 1260cd/m2 .

If the surface brightness is 1000 cd/m2 , and there are 2 reflectors from LCD to touch panel, the transmitted brightness would be 916 cd/m2 .

Then the backlight that used to lighten the display is dimmer than the reflected light, and reflected light makes white
brighter and drowns other colors. This is the reason causing LCD's poor readability in strong light.

Display Principle in Sunlight – Optical Bonded Screen

Enhance screen's sunlight readability means to raise its extrinsic contrast ratio. It can be achieved by increasing LCD's backlight brightness or reducing the reflected light brightness, or both.

However, once backlight brightness is increased, the power consumption will also rise; LCD goes hot and affects the reliability. Consequently, reducing the brightness of reflected light is the essential approach to tackle those problems.

Optical Bonding means bonding the touch panel into the polarizer of LCD's front surface. Since the refractive index for optical adhesive is 1.5, almost the same as glass, thus the 2 reflectors related to air could be eliminated. Meanwhile, the anti-reflection coating (AR) treated on touch panel surface, would reduce the reflectivity of whole screen into 0.4%. Lower reflection loss means higher contrast ratio: 500 cd/m2 , readable in sunlight; 800 cd/m2 , readable in strong light.

Optical bonding not only improves the strong light readability, but enhances screen's reliability in harsh environments.

If you want to read the display clearly outdoors, the surface brightness must be at least 500 cd/m²,
